You may have noticed that we are now The Move Out Bin. Why did we abandon the Move N Box? Our name sounded too close to a competitor, so we changed it to avoid confusion.

What we discovered was that the name makes more sense! If you have experienced a big move, you know that it is more stressful to move out of your old place than it is to move into your new one. New homes are filled with excitement and new adventures, making the tasks of moving arduous. We haven’t met one person who gets excited at the task of putting their entire home into boxes, so we’re here to help!

We have compiled a list of

12 tips and tricks to help your moving process proceed with ease.

Tip 1 – Purge and Declutter

Since you are handling all your belongings and storing them away, this is the perfect opportunity to go through them and get rid of unnecessary items. This will also help ease the stress of unpacking. It’s not efficient to pack everything away, move it to a new place and unpack it just to find out you don’t want it.

This will not only help your new home feel clean and uncluttered, but it will also help you decide what you value and what you need to keep.

Tip 2 – Wash Everything

Wash all your curtains as they collect a lot of dust over time. you don’t want to bring in allergens from your old house into your new one. We also suggest washing your sheets and towels. After a long day of moving and unpacking the last thing you want to do is a load of laundry. Instead dry yourself off with clean towels and climb into your freshly laundered sheets.

Tip 3 – Gather Supplies

Collect your boxes, packing tape and bubble wrap ahead of time and ALWAYS over estimate. The Move Out Bin offers totes, moving blankets, disc padlocks and ratchet tie-downs for rent at a minimal price. We deliver your additional items with your portable storage container for your convenience.

Pro Tip: If you stop by Liquor stores, Costco or other big box stores in the morning you can often find a bunch of different sized boxes that they’re getting rid of.

Tip 4 – Pack Up Room by Room

We suggest packing room by room instead of all of them at once. If you’re packing up the bathroom and then switch to the living room without completing a box, you now have 2 or 3 open boxes in multiple parts of your home. Continue to do this and you’ll end up feeling over-whelmed from all the packing chaos.

Instead pack everything you need from each room and finish packing before moving on to the next one. Another benefit is that you know where everything you need is. You know there’s a decorative candle in the bathroom box instead of looking through a box marked candles for that one item.

Tip 5 – Lighter Items in Bigger Boxes, Heavier Items in Small Boxes

Be nice to your back, your friends back or the mover’s backs by putting the heavier items in smaller boxes. This also helps keep your belongings in top condition since you’re not roughly dropping the box with breakables in it because it’s too heavy.

Tip 6 – Pack an Essentials Box

If you’re scheduling 4 days of packing, then pack up the essentials you’ll need for that week in a suitcase. That way you can box up everything without having to worry about packing up something you’ll need. Don’t forget to pack an essentials bag for your children and your animals.

Tip 7 – Label Everything

When you’re finished packing a box, a common move is to mark down what is in the box. We also suggest marking down where that box is to be deposited in the new home.

Sharrah from the Live Your Style YouTube channel created a key for her family and movers using different coloured tape. She made a graph of the different rooms in the house and assigned different coloured tape to each separate room. She then clearly marked each box with the appropriate colored tape. When she arrived at the new home, she marked the doorknob or the door frame with the appropriate colored tape to make the process easier.

Tip 8 – paint and Patch

If you’re renting and you want to get your deposit back it is important to paint and patch the holes or marks you’ve left. Patch with putty, sand the area down and paint.

If you’re renting and you wish to update the door knobs, switch plates or any other fixture in the house, save all the swapped hardware. When you move, you’ll be able to swap them back and take the modern ones with you to your new place.

Tip 9 – Schedule a Donation

Now that all your items are sorted, boxed and you’re ready for the move, it’s time to get rid of all those items you don’t want anymore. You can put all the items online and make a little extra cash or you can donate them at your local charity.

Tip 10 – Transport Valuables

There are specific items that you would probably prefer to handle yourselves. These include plants, computers, pets, important documents or anything else you’d feel safer handling yourself. You can be assured these objects of importance will remain undamaged if they are in your possession.

Tip 11 – Acclimate Your Pets

Your pets have no idea what’s going on when you’re moving. Keep them with you and make sure they remain in the same vehicle as you if you possible. Bring something that smells like you or their old place to help them feel comfortable. When you are in your new home make sure you fall back into their routine. Feed them, play with them and maintain the structure they had, if they weren’t allowed on the couch in your old place keep that rule intact.

Tip 12 – rent a portable storage container
